April 17

Today was one of my favorite days so far! The riding was quite easy in the morning and we were quickly into Pismo Beach where we knew there was a kiteboarding event going on. We got into town very early and of course posted up and the local coffee shop. We were soon surprised when some of my friends walked up, very surprised to see us in Pismo. We meandered down to the event and caught up with some friends who were equally surprised to see us on the beach. Unfortunately the wind was light today so no riding. I learned at lunch that we would be pedaling right by another paragliding spot on our way into San Luis Obispo and although the chances were slim I hoped I would get to fly! The miles along the coast before we turned inland were some of the prettiest yet. The California coast is unbelievably undeveloped around here, especially considering the two major cities to our north and our south. As we rode by the paragliding spot we caught a glimpse of a wing just over the hill and quickly made the needed detour. After a bit of trail riding and pushing and some difficult rock scramble we made it to the hill. I ended up getting two very nice flights and enjoyed meeting the local pilot John. We packed up the glider and went into town for a much needed meal. We found an awesome little restaurant named Eureka and ended up chatting with every server about our trip. The meal was outstanding and we were surprised when the manager offered to buy us our desert! We found an interesting host on Warm Showers at a building called the Establishment so this is where we will stay for the night. About 19 people live here. It’s a very interesting arrangement, great people, and great conversation.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
